The professional body for the Recruitment industry, the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) has just released its latest ‘Report on Jobs’ providing an insight into the latest hiring trends.

The Report is full of information about employers’ thoughts on hiring, skills shortages, temporary versus permanent recruitment and economic confidence.  We’ve picked out some of the key points providing you with the most comprehensive guide to the Midlands labour market.

In many areas of the jobs market, candidate supply cannot meet demand. While the working population in general has experienced a pay squeeze employers are having to offer more money to secure people with the skills they need. In a nutshell …

• Permanent placements and temp billings both rise at marked rates
• Demand for staff increases at fastest rate since April 2015
• Candidate availability declines at quicker pace, pushing pay rates higher

The growth of permanent placements is strongest in the Midlands with the region seeing the fastest rate of growth for temporary staff.  These trends are concerns for businesses which can only grow if they have access to the people and skills they need.

• Staff appointments continue to rise sharply with the number of people placed into permanent and temporary assignments rising
• Staff vacancies rise at quickest rate for 28 months and the growth of demand for staff reaching its highest since April 2015.
• Further drop in candidate availability to fulfil permanent and temporary job roles w fell by the greatest extent in 20 months.
